What Is HackerTube?

Andrej Karpathy built HackerTube to surface YouTube videos recommended in Hacker News discussions. The initial collection included 6,454 videos across 150 topics.

How Was It Built?

Karpathy used Claude Code to filter Hacker News comments and a Sonnet workflow to identify video recommendations. The YouTube Data API supplied video metadata.

What Can Developers Reuse?

The public data export can support new directories and discovery tools. The complete site source code was not published; videos and metadata have separate usage rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reuse HackerTube data in my own project?

Karpathy says the site data is available as an export. Inspect the current export and its terms, and check the rules for linked media before using it.

Is the full HackerTube source code available?

The published data export is not a complete copy of the production site or a ready-to-run codebase.

Are all listed projects built from the same data?

No. Their relationships differ: some use HackerTube signals, while others adapt a Hacker News discovery method.

Can I earn a commission just by embedding YouTube videos?

No. A link or embed does not automatically create a commission or ownership of the video.

What should I check before launching a similar directory?

Choose a clear audience, inspect the source data and usage rules, preserve attribution, and plan for broken links.

Is hackertubeguide the official HackerTube website?

No. This is an independent guide and project directory. The original site is https://hackertube.org/ (opens in a new tab).
