HackerTube, YouTube and Hacker News Explained
How community discussions turn into a different video discovery experience.

Hacker News supplies the signal
Hacker News discussions contain links that readers choose to share. A comment can offer context for why a talk, tutorial or interview is useful. That community signal is different from a universal popularity chart: it reflects what appeared in a particular discussion and what the collection process selected.
YouTube hosts the videos
The underlying videos are on YouTube. Metadata from its API can help identify and describe a video, while playback and content rights remain with YouTube and the relevant creators. A directory can link to or embed a video where permitted, but that does not make the directory the owner of the video or create an automatic commission.
HackerTube creates the browsing layer
The original site selects, organizes and presents those recommendations as a focused way to discover videos. The resulting experience connects a discussion signal with hosted content. These roles should stay clear when explaining the site: Hacker News is the community context, YouTube is the video platform, and HackerTube is the curated discovery interface.
Keep the sources visible
A useful follow-on project should retain a path to the original video and the discussion that gave it context. Explain what your own project adds, and distinguish your work from the original site's work. If a linked source disappears or changes, the page should not imply that its old description is still current.
